I know I'm old but......

Now let me tell you the story ‘bout a man named Charlie, on a tragic and fateful day. He put ten cents in his pocket, kissed his wife and family, went to ride on the M.T.A.

Those are the opening lyrics of an early 60’s era folk song titled M.T.A., about the Boston Metropolitan Transit Authority, sung by a trio of Nick, Bob and Dave, known as the Kingston Trio.

Nick Reynolds, one of the founders, died earler this week. He was in his 70s. This is not to focus on his death but on his life, as he and the Kingston Trio brought folk music to the forefront in the late 50s and early 60s.

There were songs like Tom Dooley. Pete Seeger’s Where Have All the Flowers Gone was to become the anthem of the anti-Vietnam war crowd, with its memorable words of young men gone to graveyards, everyone. Following the Kingston Trio were Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Peter Paul and Mary, with some memorable songs and protest lyrics.

It was a long time ago, another war, another generation. But on days like today, it seems little more than yesterday. Thanks for the memories, Nick. And may you Rest In Peace.
